Telica Rota Natural Reserve
Telica Rota Natural Reserve is located in Leon Department northwest of Lake Managua. Telica volcano has a double crater, one of which is inactive. The active crater of Telica Volcano often spews gas and ash into the air and has hot lava visible from the edge of the crater. The Volcano is a bit barren itself because of the ash and recent lava flows, but the surrounding area has vegetation. Local tour guides are available, but a hike up the volcano will likely take 10 or 11 hours, so it usually entails spending the night camping on the top of the volcano.
The flow of lava below the ground creates bubbling mud pools near the city of San Jacinto, which is a nice divesion before or after your long trek up or down the volcano.
