Jinotega Department is one of fifteen (15) departments and two (2) autonomous regions in Nicaragua. Jinotega Department is located in the north central part of Nicaragua and shares a border with the country of Honduras. It is the largest of the Nicaragua Departments is land area, if you don't consider the Nicaragua Autonomous Regions which are both larger in land area than Jinotega Department.
Due to its size, Jinotega Department contains numerous Nicaragua Natural Reserves or portions of them. This includes the Bosawas Natural Reserve, which covers almost the entire northern half of Jinotega Department. In addition, Jinotega Department is home to the Cerro Kilambe Natural Reserve, the Yali Volcano Natural Reserve, the Cerro Dantali El Diablo Natural Reserve, and portions of the Macizos de Penas Blancas Natural Reserve, and portions of the Miraflor Natural Reserve.
The capital of Jinotega Department is the city of Jinotega, Nicaragua.
